You see, technically there are two towns in Johnson County named Bargersville. Here's how it works.

In 1850, a fella named Jefferson Barger purchase some land in a new area south of Indianapolis. Let's just go ahead and assume that the town was named after him. Not long after, they built the 1850s version of a highway - a plank road - from Franklin. But if you know anything about plank roads in 1850, you know that over time they're no better, if not worse, than a muddy trail.

Then, just after the turn of the century, the Indianapolis Southern Railway was built. Unfortunately for Bargersville, it missed the original town by a half-mile or so. The railroad station (which took the name Bargersville) was like a flame to moths, attracting new businesses like a bank, a lumber yard, a general store and more. Old Bargesville was pretty much left to rot.

But … turnabout is fair play. Today, two state highways intersect where the old Bargersville stood. State highways bring cars, cars bring money. And the two Bargersvilles have made peace with each other in this new reality of cooperation.

Bargersville was officially established in 1880, covering 1.1 square miles across parts of White River and Union Townships, about 20 miles south of Indianapolis. Officially, the population was 4,013 as of the 2010 census, up from 2,120 in 2000.

Bargersville is one of those small towns that's terribly convenient to big towns, with just a short commute to Indianapolis or Bloomington. Locally, you should enjoy the Bargersville Flea Market and the attached farmers' markets. Plus, there are some very nice local restaurants - places where they'll know your name and welcome you in.

Bargersville is served by the Center Grove Community School Corporation, one of the fastest-growing yet most successful districts in the state.

For the future, Bargersville is going to grow, with discussions about expanding its borders to annex more of White River Township and service the newly-created neighborhoods and businesses nearby.
